Volvo B12BLEs/Custom were first introduced into the STA fleets at Newcastle. Here 1406 (MO1406) is seen from the footbridge over the railway in the city centre in August 2009.

This view of 1407 (MO1407) some five years earlier shows the livery difference of these vehicles compared to their newer counterparts in Sydney. The shade of blue used is definitely darker and the blue/white split towards the rear follows a curved rather than diagonal line. The buses also enjoy the red stripe which was only seen on the early B12BLE/Custom deliveries in Sydney.

Volvo 1416 (MO1416) lurches out of Newcastle Bus Station while a flagman holds up the traffic. He was one of two guys deployed on this task, the other is holding up the traffic in the opposite direction. It is not known if this is a permanent job or was occasioned by rail replacement activity on the day in August 2009. The frequency with which their service were needed seemed to be every five minutes or so, and it was not as if the traffic was heavy! Perhaps it was part of a government job creation scheme.

In August 2009 several Newcastle Buses were promoting P&O cruises for 2010 with Newcastle having recently become a new departure port. Volvo 1420 (MO1420) had a near all over wrap for the cruises.
