Following a long gestation period Stagecoach Oxford's pioneering Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV doubledeckers finally started to enter service in quantity in the city, initially primarily on route 10. These are the first of their type to take to the UK's streets, but most have been built for some months and stored at various Stagecoach depots pending the commissioning of the charging structure at the Oxford depot. After some false starts this was finally brought online on Thursday, this 400EV, 80001 (SK24XRB) being seen at the Carfax in the city this Monday. When there was only limited charging capacity at the depot 80001 and a handful of others saw some city service and 80001 visited the Bucks Railway Centre at Quainton in September for SHOWBUS. Others of the batch of around fifty had been stored with large numbers at Chesterfield, Witney and Cheltenham, with others still residing at Alexander Dennis' plant at Falkirk. Oxford Bus Co has always had a bigger fleet in the city and its 100 plus Wright Streetdeck Electroliners had been in service much earlier, though the last one arrived last week. Both the Wright and Alexander Dennis buses are funded by central government grants, local council funding and of course by Stagecoach and Go-Ahead. As will be seen on this week's YouTube addition to the showbus.com channel there are still plenty of diesel buses in the city, though Stagecoach's doubledeckers should be phased out as more Eniro400EV electrics hit the road.
