Whilst Cardiff's Alexander bodied Bristol VRs with their big chunky grills and peaked roofs had overtones of the Alexander bodied Ailsa, when Cardiff received a batch of Ailsas in the eighties they were a relatively rare combination with Northern Counties bodywork. Few doubledeckers remained in the fleet in 2002, but Ailsa 408 (NWO408X), retained for school work, looked very smart at the company's Centenary Display, complete with an electronic blind.

Following the substantial Ailsa deliveries, Cardiff reverted to more convential buses with a couple of batches of East Lancs bodied Leyland Olympians. These buses seemed surplus to requirements when new and were hired to Culturebus for use on London city sightseeing tours. Later in their lives they were on Cardiff tours for Guide Friday, converted to open top. Olympian 553 (B553ATX) is seen when new on the haunt of most new deliveries, the trunk route linking Cardiff with neighbouring Newport - route 30.

 After a lull, Cardiff followed neighbouring Newport's doubledeck purchase with a batch of seven Alexander bodied Scania N113s, so apart from the orange livery, 604 (G604KTX) would feel at home when it arrived at Newport on the 30. |

 All over advert bus 339 (WTG339T) was on display by City Hall on the occasion of the Cardiff Bus Rally back in 1985. Alongside the Alexander bodied Bristol VRT is Red Rover of Aylesbury's newly acquired Leyland National 161 (TGY101M). The bus is a dual door 10.3 metre model, similar to Cardiff's Nationals, however 161 was London Transport's first National: LS1. |
