One of the French built Navya driverlass buses has been on trial in Australia. It has already been on trial in Olympic Park in Sydney and along the South Perth Esplanade, so on Tuesday it was Melbourne's turn with the bus being launched to the press that day. Wednesday was ANZAC Day so on Thursday the bus was photographed at the trial set around the internal roads of La Trobe University's Bundoora campus. These roads are shared with full size buses and other traffic. The bus only seats eight and is open to use by University students and staff who have to prebook a ride and first attend a presentation before boarding. Though driverless there is an attendant on board in case of any problems. Belts and braces are included too as the bus is followed round its route by two men in the VW ute seen behind with its roof light flashing - there are also electronic temporary warning signs erected akong the route warning other motorists that a trial bus is in operation and they should be prepared to stop. It is lacking the man walking in front with a flag. Supposedly it is better to be safe than sorry but the over provision does not inspire confidence and makes one wonder if the Navya has a history of causing chaos in its wake or is prone to spontaneous combustion. When first seen the bus was parked with its front and rear inspection panels open suggesting that was aiding the cooling of the batteries and motor. The bus did set off on a successful trip and is featured in this week's YouTube video.
