Thanks to Paul McSherry from Northern Ireland for this week's picture from Manchester. For the second week running we have a hybrid Volvo B5LH but this is a very different beast from the Cradle Mountain discoverer singledecker in Tasmania last week. This Wright bodied doubledecker is on the high profile Vantage service linking Leigh with Manchester. Unlike the rest of the city, the route enjoys a number of bus priorities and reserved roadways. Sadly the proposals from Mayor Andy Burnham to sieze control of the city's buses seem to be more about control than proritising buses over other traffic. One envisages an exercise in which more money will be spent rebranding buses, bus stops, etc than actually improving the quality and reliability of the services. On the plus side irate passengers will know who to blame and it is amazing that politicians desperate for control never see this spectacular downside. If Jeremy Corbyn becomes Prime Minister and nationalises the railways one wonders how many letters will fill his postbag from passengers complaining the 6.47 from Chichester was eight minutes late again. Sadly control does not bring with it utopia. Wisely First Manchester has wisely all but quit the Manchester market, the Vantage operation being a notable exception. This is their 39243 (BW65DCO) seen next to a convenient rack of bicycles, but it is not clear whether many passengers switch between these modes of travel at this location. A shame that UK buses do not deploy bike racks as so widely used in the US and Canada and evident on our recent string of ADL Enviro500MMC buses from those countries in recent Pictures of the Week.
