Four views of George Street in early January 2016 shortly after TfNSW closed the street from Central Station down to Circular Quay for construction of the new tram line. Some 2.8km was closed, but only to buses. Other traffic could travel unhindered as far as the Town Hall from Central.

Barricades across George Street by the QVB, no longer do scores of Hillsbus commuter buses line up here to scoop up passengers to head to the hills. They have to walk two blocks north and one east to find their buses. Most services used to start from Railway Square so passengers that used to board at that end have a walk of well over a kilometre or batle with catching a train one station to Town Hall or two to Wynyard. No alternative bus provision was available linking Central with either the Town Hall or Circular Quay.

The alternative of rail provision is not an easy option, particularly for the eldrly and infirm. Boarding a bus, particularly a kneeling one is easy. Navigating multiple platforms on different levels with escalators and long walks is not an option for this sizeable group of people. It is also a huge inconvenience for regular passengers.

It was particuarly frustrating when with a bit of care and planning a service could have been maintained along the south end of George Street and parallel streets. A clear example of quangos like TfNSW ride roughshod over the needs of their customers. One wonders if they ever use public transport themselves and suspects that they are fit and able bodied.

An aerial view of Railway Square. Note the large number of cars in the bottom right about to head down George Street where buses were banned.
